Picture books, who didn't grow up with it? If you have small children yourself, you will probably also have quite a few books in the house yourself. Whether you buy them yourself or get a gift, (almost) everyone likes picture books!
But what is a picture book anyway?
A picture book is a children's book with text and beautiful images, but there are rules attached to this. The book usually consists of 32 pages and the story consists of a maximum of 1000-1500 words and sometimes has no text at all, for example The yellow balloon.
The story often contains a message or a problem must be solved and the story usually ends positively.
In picture books you often see beautiful images made by the best illustrators. These too have a function, they reinforce the story and so the child (and older) always fascinates the book listening.
One of the best known picture book Illustrators is Charlotte Dematons, known for, among other things, the beautiful fairy tale book The yellow balloon or There you are.
Most picture books are suitable for children aged 3-6 years old. They are often able to really understand a story. They are read by their parents and you can then talk about the story.
National Reading Days
Reading aloud is extremely important for children. From toddlers and preschoolers who are regularly read, almost 70 percent have enough vocabulary to make a good start at school.
To stimulate reading aloud, the Stichting Reading and CPNB is organized the National Reading Days at the start of the new year. A picture book Top 10 is selected for this by Youth librarians, booksellers and teachers. The story and beautiful illustrations are paid to this, but the jury also looks at opportunities for play and interaction with toddlers.
A picture book of the year is chosen from this picture book Top 10, which is central to the National Reading Days.
